Roselien - Not My Fantasy
“Not My Fantasy” shows off Roselien’s uncanny ability to pull R&B forward with a futuristic flare. With nods to G-funk, R&B, pop, and hip-hop works in unison to create something that feels uniquely her own. Her vocals have a beauty about them for they seem to soar up into the sky. A sultry sort of approach there is a great vulnerability that he infuses into the sound. The degree of retro-futurism recalls a bit of Dam Funk’s similar style. Unlike Dam Funk, Roselien lets the sound get ultra-saturated until it becomes a dense cloud that washes over the listener.
The evolution of the groove serves as the very focal point from which all else flows, from the vocal style to the bassline itself. Done with such grace, there is a classic sensibility that she uses for the production. Layer upon layer adds into the fray making sure there is a beauty to behold. So much colour adds to the vividness of the entirety of the piece. Grooves here sprawl on out into the infinite for there is a welcoming presence to the whole thing.
Somehow it simultaneously has an old-school kick while pointing towards a more interesting future for pop. By bridging these two opposing elements together she creates something that becomes more beguiling with each reiteration. Lyrics here have a poetry to them for they make sure to embrace a dreaminess.
Roselien brings a creativity to pop music that feels outright gorgeous, as “Not My Fantasy” has a joy to it.
