The Frisky Gypsys embarks upon a weird wild and wonderful journey with the darkly mysterious “Ocean”

The Frisky Gypsys – Ocean

The Frisky Gypsys embarks upon a weird wild and wonderful journey with the darkly mysterious “Ocean”. A classic sensibility touches upon the sound, for they have a deft touch with production making sure every element absolutely sparkles. Chamber pop, modern folk, with a hint of rock’s bombast all neatly filters into the mix but the way they sculpt it feels distinctly theirs. By allowing all these many layers into the fray what results is a very engrossing, all-encompassing sound one that blooms with radiant colour. Easily the highlight of the piece comes from the poetic lyricism that has a genteel cadence behind it ensuring that every single verse is chosen with such care. In terms of references, they do draw a bit from the graceful lines of Grizzly Bear alongside the sundrenched spirit of Fleet Foxes’ fondness for nature.

Every instrument matters enormously with each reiteration of the rhythm. From the deft touch of the drum hitting with sheer physicality to the guitar riffs that neatly snap into place alongside the tempo, it all comes together into a semi-psychedelic yet cohesive whole. Volume is truly a must for theirs is a sound that requires a bit of a physical presence. Right in the centre of it all and what in fact frames it are those reassuring yet beguiling vocals, that have a steady pace whose lyrics go for an unusually strong sense of beauty.

“Ocean” offers an incredible forward-focused take on folk’s grand traditions, and the Frisky Gypsys updates the sound to make it their own.
