Jwavy’s Flawless Rise: From Seattle’s Sound to National Spotlight

Seattle has a new queen making waves in the hip-hop scene—Jwavy. Born Jasmine Smith, she’s not just riding the wave—she’s creating it. Blending authenticity, faith, and raw talent, Jwavy is quickly becoming a name you can’t ignore. Her story isn’t just about music; it’s about purpose, power, and perseverance.

Jwavy’s journey started with poetry and purpose. Growing up in a musically rich home, her father Mr. Benjamin was a respected name in Seattle’s rap scene, and her brother MariBased1 would soon become one of the city’s breakout stars. But Jwavy wasn’t content to just watch—she stepped up to the mic and brought her own story to life.

She officially began recording music in 2020–2021, pouring her pain, faith, and power into every track. After losing her grandmother Juanita—a best friend and source of unconditional love—Jwavy was nearly broken. But she found healing through Jesus, through family, and through her music. “Every song I create carries a piece of her love,” she says.

Jwavy’s voice quickly went from bedroom notes to Billboard buzz. Her debut album WAVESZN caught fire, with her hit single “Broke Boi” peaking at #28 on the iTunes Hip-Hop/Rap Top 40 and hitting #1 on Amazon’s Mover and Shakers chart. The track reflects everything she is—real, bold, and unapologetic. It’s not just a song; it’s a movement. As she puts it, “Seattle music is real. This ain’t a game—it’s a movement.”

And that movement is taking her far beyond the 206. Jwavy is set to perform live in Los Angeles during BET Weekend on the New Energy Stage, and she’ll be headed to Anchorage, Alaska, with Lady Nate for the “Take Over Alaska” event. She’s also bringing her vibe to the metaverse, performing live inside the Mariotto-Verse during the “Seattle Music Is Real Showcase 6” series, hosted every last Saturday from March through August at Lems Bookstore. You can log in and tune in from anywhere in the world.

Her accolades speak for themselves:

  • Billboard placements across Seattle

  • A BET Jams feature for “Love Me” featuring MariBased1

  • Honors from the 2024 West Coast Hip-Hop Awards

  • Recognition from Feed A Million and Seattle Cares Mentoring

  • Mentorship of young Black and Indigenous girls across Seattle

Jwavy’s day-to-day is proof of her dedication. From morning worship and mentorship sessions at Denny International and Lincoln High School, to gym workouts, creative business leadership with Jwavy Inc., and studio collabs with MariBased1, she balances it all with grace and grind. She mentors youth in everything from photography and video to personal growth, empowering them the way her family empowered her.

As she gears up to release her sophomore album, Flawless Victory, Jwavy promises to take things deeper. “It’s more than an album—it’s a statement,” she says. “It’s who I am, and who I’m becoming.” Inspired by legends like Missy Elliott, she aims to mix innovation with inspiration, creating songs that hit the soul and move the culture forward.

Through it all, Jwavy stays humble and grounded in gratitude. “None of this would be possible without God, my family, my fans, and my city,” she shares. And if her rise has taught us anything, it’s that Seattle’s time is now—and Jwavy is leading the way.
